Why Being Rude Is Bad For Business
I don’t get mad very often. I’ve always been surprised when people around me get furious at what seem to me to be fairly innocuous events or interactions.
But one category of behavior can really spike my blood pressure: rudeness. Just so we’re talking about the same thing, by rude I mean operating in a way that disregards the comfort, rights, or feelings of others. So, for instance: Cutting into a line in front of others who have been waiting patiently. Interrupting a colleague in a meeting to dismiss his idea as foolish.
In one poll of 800 workers, they found that, among workers who’ve been on the receiving end of incivility:
•Four in five lost work time worrying about the incident, or were less committed to the organization.
•Two thirds said they lost work time avoiding the offender, or that their performance declined.
•Almost half intentionally decreased their work efforts or the time they spent at work.
•Over a third intentionally decreased the quality of their work.
•A quarter admitted to taking their frustration out on customers.
•More than one in ten said that they left their job because of the uncivil treatment.
One of the excuses we use to be uncivil toward each other is that “the other person has it in for me,” or “is trying to make things hard for me.” If, however, when others inconvenience or upset you, you assume instead that they are basically well-intended people but may not understand the impact they’re having on you, you’ll be much less likely to automatically respond to them in an aggressive way – and the situation is less likely to escalate. For example, if someone doesn’t fulfill a commitment they’ve made to you at work, and you assume they don’t care, are lazy, or have intentionally snubbed you – you’ll probably be rude to them…and they’ll probably be rude back. If, however, you assume that they intended to do what they said they would do, but that something got in the way – you’ll most likely approach them in a calm, curious way…and working out the situation will be relatively easy and civil.

Could you ask that guy Brian who you met at the last international trade fair if he can send us some info about their new product? It could be great if he could give us a demo too.
Thanks! Kirsten

Job-search process

1. The job-search process usually begins with a general analysis of the work market. During this analysis answer two questions:
1. What job opportunities are available in your region?
2. What skills or qualifications do these jobs require, and how do they match your own skills and qualifications?
2. The next (probably one of the most important steps) step is to write or update your CV. Make a list of your skills, and write down examples of how and when you used these skills. Make sure you have copies of any awards and certificates you have received. A CV should be short — two to three pages at most. When you describe your work experience, it’s essential to say what you learnt from your previous jobs. It’s a good idea to write something about yourself and any interests or hobbies that you have. And don’t forget to say which foreign languages you can speak. Finally, remember to give the contact details of two references.

3. Step 3: search and apply for suitable jobs. Talk to family, friends and neighbours. Look for job ads in local newspapers. Sign up to job vacancy websites. Contact employers directly. Sign up with a recruitment company. Then identify the exact job(s) that you wish to apply for. You can apply for jobs online, via email or in-person.
4. Step 4: prepare and practise for job interviews. Think about what kind of questions an employer might ask you. Write down your answers to possible questions. Practise answering interview questions with friends. Think about what questions you can ask employers. Look at the employer’s website to learn about their organisation.
5. Step 5: attend job interviews. To make a good impression:
-arrive early for the interview;
— have a notepad with your list of questions for the employer. You may also want to take notes in the interview;
— have an idea about what salary you would like;
— dress neatly and in clothing that would be appropriate for the job.
6. Step 6: get a job offer. If you are offered a job, take the time to carefully evaluate the offer and to look over the details. Afterwards make a decision to accept, or to reject, the offer.
7. Answer the questions on the topic: Job-search process

1. What is the first step in the job-search process?
2. What are the most important things to include in your CV?
3. How long should your CV be?
4. How can you get information about job vacancies?
5. Where is the best place to find a job?
6. How can you apply for a job?
7. How can you get information about the company you are applying to?
8. What should you do to make a good impression at the job interview?
